↗ Worthwhile Diversion
Optional out-and-back branch from the Falkirk Wheel along the Union Canal to central Edinburgh. It is a substantial side journey, not a requirement for completing the loop.
Why this stop matters
BLUE500 view
A substantial optional branch from the Falkirk Wheel along the Union Canal to central Edinburgh. This is not required to complete the BLUE500 loop, but it is exactly the kind of city-scale side journey the Worthwhile Diversion category is intended to capture. Edinburgh Quay/Lochrin Basin provides visitor facilities in the city, while the branch adds a distinctive canal journey rather than simply another overnight stop.
Scottish Canals describes the Union Canal as running from the Falkirk Wheel to the historic heart of Edinburgh. Its current facilities guide lists Edinburgh Quay with visitor mooring, water, shore power, refuse, shower, Elsan, pump-out, diesel, toilets, information, food nearby, boat hire and places of interest. The same guide gives the Edinburgh-to-Falkirk Wheel distance as about 34 miles. Current Lowland Canal rules state visitor moorings are free for short-term use with a maximum 24-hour stay; lowland-canal boats that use both Forth & Clyde and Union sections must respect the 1.06m maximum draft. The 2026 Lowlands outward-and-return short-term licence provides two 10-night periods, so the diversion needs to be considered in overall canal timing and licence planning.

What a cruiser needs to know
Field verification still required
DIVERSION LOGIC: confirm how BLUE500 should describe the out-and-back Union Canal diversion, realistic cruising days, suitable intermediate nights and the rejoin sequence at Falkirk Wheel.
VESSEL FIT: confirm dimensions/air-draft constraints in addition to the published 1.06m draft and whether typical BLUE500 motor cruisers can comfortably make the full branch.
EDINBURGH VISITOR MOORING: verify exact visitor allocation at Edinburgh Quay/Lochrin, security, practical 24-hour rule, booking/contact process and whether longer short-term stays can ever be arranged.
DESTINATION: define a realistic 1-day/2-day Edinburgh shore experience without turning BLUE500 into a city guide.
IMAGERY: photograph Falkirk Wheel branch decision, Union Canal character, aqueducts/bridges and city-centre arrival.
