Edinburgh Quay/Lochrin Basin provides visitor facilities in the city, while the branch adds a distinctive canal journey rather than simply another overnight stop.

Scottish Canals describes the Union Canal as running from the Falkirk Wheel to the historic heart of Edinburgh. Its current facilities guide lists Edinburgh Quay with visitor mooring, water, shore power, refuse, shower, Elsan, pump-out, diesel, toilets, information, food nearby, boat hire and places of interest. The same guide gives the Edinburgh-to-Falkirk Wheel distance as about 34 miles. Current Lowland Canal rules state visitor moorings are free for short-term use with a maximum 24-hour stay; lowland-canal boats that use both Forth & Clyde and Union sections must respect the 1.06m maximum draft. The 2026 Lowlands outward-and-return short-term licence provides two 10-night periods, so the diversion needs to be considered in overall canal timing and licence planning.
